July 10, 1928 – December 26, 2011

Peacefully at the age of eighty-three.
Born in Luserna, Italy in 1928 and educated at the University of Turin and the University of Genoa, Dr. Gustavo Bounous’ distinguished career in medical research began as a Research Fellow in surgery at the Indiana Medical Center, Indianapolis led to his appointment as Professor of Surgery, first at the University of Sherbrooke (1973-1985) and then at McGill University (1985-1993).

Dr. Bounous was awarded the 1965 medal of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. In 1968, he was named Career Investigator of the Medical Research Council, an award that was reconfirmed until 1993, the year of his retirement from McGill University.

In 1978, Dr. Bounous initiated a novel research program in conjunction with colleagues from McGill University to search for a dietary protein source that would optimize the immune system. Their research followed up to the isolation of a specific whey protein concentrate that helps to sustain normal glutathione levels and a strong immune system. Subsequent identification of the active ingredients present in this protein led to the development of a bioactive material given the name Immunocal®. In 1993. Dr. Bounous later commented: “Discoveries are not made by scientific committee; they’re made by individuals who have been lucky and persistent.”

Dr. Bounous leaves behind an outstanding legacy. His research led to the development of products that have positively affected thousands of lives. During this time of great loss, it is comforting to realize that his genius did not merely exist in a research laboratory, but lives on in the improved health of the many people who have benefited from his research.

Son of the late Ada and Carlo Bounous of Luserna, Italy. Beloved brother of Luciana Bounous. Long-time friend of Marie Aubin. Adopted grandfather of Geneviève and Francois DeSerres. Dr. Bounous will be missed by many friends and colleagues that enjoyed his great wit and charm. All of us at Immunotec deeply mourn his loss.

Fueled by its exploding business in Mexico, Immunotec will soon open new offices and a distribution center in Mexico City.
